It has been very busy this month at Alexx Henry Photography and we have a couple of great projects to share with you in the next few weeks.

Meanwhile… we’ve been named photo studio of the month at Samy’s Camera this February and our friends at Obscura Digital have lent us a Multi-Touch Display to help show off our work. We’ve posted on them before, but check them out here for more goodness.  If you’re in Los Angeles, please drop by Samy’s from February 15-21 and check out the Multi-Touch along with a print gallery of our work.

Also, on February 23rd, Samy’s will be hosting us for a talk about Living Art. You can get tickets and more information here.

Incredible Low Light Video With the Canon 1ds MKIV *Updated*
Tuesday October 20th 2009, 11:43 AM Posted by: Alexx
Filed under: Video

Vincent Laforet along with Stu Maschwitz and David Nelson put together this vignette that shows off the incredible low light sensitivity of the Canon 1ds MKIV.

Vincent Laforet created a ton of buzz with his Reverie film shot with the Canon 5D Mark II and it looks like he’s onto something again – this time with the new Canon 1D Mark IV. The entire 3 minute segment is shot at ISO 6400 on the new professional DSLR.

Watch it in HD here.

Here’s our “Living” Magazine Cover and Spread released with the October issue of Outside Magazine. Photographed with the Red One camera, we created our vision of how a motion-magazine of the not-too-distant future would look based on emerging technologies like flexible OLED and E Ink.

Music is “Gone Gone Days” by Two Years Before the Mast and “I Like Van Halen Because My Sister Says They Are Cool” which has got to be my favorite song title in the world by El Ten Eleven. You can buy El Ten Eleven’s music here: itunes.com/elteneleven

Here is a quick teaser to whet your appetite. Stay tuned for the final version which will be released with the October issue of Outside Magazine.

The Inevitable Convergence of Photography and Motion

Thanks to everyone for all the terrific feedback and comments on this and all the other blogs that carried the Living One Sheet Video! It’s great to be part of this discussion. This is such an incredibly exciting time to be an image maker. We are at the dawn of something new.

It won’t be long before the Harry Potter vision of the future is realized with moving portraits adorning newspapers and adverts. I am so excited about all the possibilities with converging photography with motion and thrilled to be on the front lines.

I’ve been getting some feedback about how these changes are exciting but scary, and some fear about the barrier to entry (cost of Red etc…) and I’d just like to state the obvious and say that yeah, change can be scary, but as Heraclitus pointed out 2500 years ago, the only constant is change. So as artists, we wind up facing the fundamental Darwinian axiom- evolve or dissolve.

Sure the Red One is expensive, but you can rent. And even still, the video image quality from the 5DMII is breathtaking, and that is certainly affordable.

So I challenge you to go out and try something. Take your aesthetic and vision as an image maker and try something new. I’d love to see what you can come up with. As an added incentive, there’s even a contest in the works. Stay tuned for the deets.

Best,

Alexx

Youtube Version Alternate Link

As promised, here is our experience with using the Red One Camera, chronicling our voyage beyond the still image.  Looking forward to our next project featuring living art portraits. Stay tuned… After the video, take a peek at the links to see the final results.

We’re very excited about all the possibilities with converging photography and motion. Big thanks to everyone who helped make this happen. Especially Pam, DJ and Chad over at Hallmark who championed the idea. It’s not every client who is willing to take a risk with something new and they deserve recognition for this.

White Rabbits and Circular Tracks

Just ran into this video by the White Rabbits directed by Andrew Droz Palermo. It is a definite watch. The simple set design and circular motion really make this video stand out. This just goes to show you don’t need a complicated and expensive video set to create something amazing. The circular movement really helps you experience the flow of the song. When a music video matches all the elements of music, editing, and lighting together, it’s a beautiful thing. It can make you really feel a song. This video reminds me of one of my old favorite music videos by Taking Back Sunday.

Wind Activated LED Lights
Thursday May 21st 2009, 12:28 PM Posted by: Andrew

LED lights have always amazed me and they seem to be popping up as beautiful art pieces. I would love to have this Wind Activated LED display somewhere in my city at night. This was made by Jason Krugman.

“Conceptually, this project developed out of an idea to create a modular system that does not rely on a central decision making hub, such as a computer…Wind is one of the few natural phenomena that can penetrate the dense urban environment. However, we can’t see it because it needs a media to propagate through. The city, constructed of glass, steel and concrete, is intentionally rigid, not allowing nature to affect it. By purposefully adding a physical media for the wind to affect, we can make it a prominently visible feature of the urban environment, bringing natural beauty into densest urban thicket.”
